Once Upon A Time

In the 13th century, Llywelyn, prince of North Wales, had a place at Beddgelert. One day he went hunting without Gelert “the faithful hound” who was unaccountably absent. On Llywelyn’s return, the truant stained and smeared with blood, joyfully sprang to meet his master. The prince alarmed hastened to find his son, and saw the infant’s cot empty, the bed-clothes and floor covered with blood. The frantic father plunged the sword into the hound’s side thinking it had killed his heir. The dog’s dying yelp was answered by a child’s cry. Llwelyn searched and discovered his boy unharmed but near by the body of a mighty wolf which his dog, Gelert, had slain, the prince filled with remorse, is said never to have smiled again. He buried Gelert here, the spot is called Beddgelert.

This is the sequel to my last book, describing my personal journey of reconciliation following a profound loss. This will be the very hardest to write. It will illuminate there is a future after terrible loss, that one can experience joy and love again, but as everything in life that is important, it takes a lot of work, an incredible network of relationships, a mother who understands more than you would ever know until her death, the realization that your pain was nothing compared to your beloved son, and that once in a while a star shines more brightly at night.

Featuring “The Legend of the Dragonfly” poem, by Walter Dudley Cavert, this animated video follows the metamorphosis of a dragonfly nymph. His transformative journey is illustrated through Claude Monet’s vibrant “Water Lilies” series and set to an original composition on piano, by Jaime Clifton-Ross, inspired by the dragonfly-filled ponds in the historic Hatley Castle gardens. As he flutters between lily pad and weeping willow, he comes to terms with leaving behind his loved ones and embracing his new form.
